I arrived at Scott Air Force Base the evening before the show and met up with April Marling Chief of Force Support Squadron. She was nice enough to treat me to some pizza for dinner while we went over the plans for the band and the festival. Once the plan was laid out, she got me through security and to my lodging. After the drive from Nashville and a full belly I was ready for a shower and a bed.
Got up around 8 and had some breakfast before heading over to the stage to check and see if everything was going smoothly with the set up. Introduced myself to Special Events Coordinator SSGT Alyssa Mcpeak. April and Alyssa will be my main contacts for the event. Everything was good to go on my end so I let them attend to their other duties getting the rest of the festival grounds set up.
I have a couple of hours to kill before the band, Rubiks Groove, arrives around 11. Checked in on them to make sure they were not having any issues on their drive in from Nashville. They arrived on time and me and Alyssa met them at security. Once cleared we escorted them to the stage for load in and sound check. It was a smooth process and they were done about an hour ahead of schedule. The base provided everyone with lunch and then it was time to prepare for the show. Rubiks Groove is a really cool 80’s, 90’s band that performs as characters from that era.
After the band had changed into their costumes they were introduced to Lt. Col. Anthony Genochio Force Support Squadron Commander and Deputy Director Jude Sorg. After their introductions it was show time. Rubiks will be performing from 3:30-6:30 with a short intermission. They are really high energy while on stage so I’m thinking they are going to be really tired. The first half of the show was great. This is a family oriented festival with a lot of things going on from carnival rides to a petting zoo. The band fit in perfectly. The kids enjoyed the dancing and costumes, and the adults enjoyed the costumes and the music. One of the few shows I’ve been to where I know every song.
The second half of the show was even better. There are a lot more people filled in at the stage area and the band rocked it. Like I said, Rubiks Groove’s show was perfect for the festival.
The show wrapped up at 6:30 and they took pictures with some of the families, the staff and myself. I know they had to be really tired, but they were having to leave tonight for a show back in Tennessee tomorrow. They still had to load out and the base had arranged for them to make some to go dinners after. They ended up staying to eat with the staff before heading out. It was a quick trip, but everyone involved had a great time and put on an outstanding show.
